A Disabled Long-Distance Ultra-Athlete, and how a chiropractor proved the medical community wrong…

I recently read a new book out by Jason Lester (2009 ESPY Award Winner for Best Male Athlete With A Disability) called, Running On Faith. It’s about Jason’s life as an ultra-distance runner and how he overcomes his disability of a paralyzed right arm, damaged in a car accident as a 12 yr. old boy, to compete in seventy triathlons, biathlons, marathons, Ironmans, and Ultramans.

As I was reading the book it was inspiring to hear him describe his challenges and how he overcomes them (mostly through faith and hard work). One thing that really caught my eye was how he describes that for over 20 years doctors and specialists had said he would never regain use of his right arm. Buried in this easy-to-read, 206 page auto-biography on pages 148-149, is his revelation about a visit in 2007 to his chiropractor in Kona, Hawaii, a Dr. Odin Willmott, D.C. He says how he came in to get other parts of his body adjusted, but the D.C. asked if he could work on his paralyzed right arm. He said sure, what did he have to lose? Every doctor he had seen for 20 years had told him his arm was a lost cause. But Dr. Willmott apparently believed otherwise.

Jason said: “After weeks of steady manipulation and therapy by my chiropractor, the triceps muscle in my right arm actually flexed. I practically stopped breathing. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Then the biceps moved. Thanks to Dr. Willmott and my relentless training, it appeared that the muscles in my arm were not dead after all.”

There are further comments on Dr. Willmott, but the gist of the book is about faith, dedication, hard work and running. It’s quite an inspirational story. If someone ever doubted that a chiropractor could possibly do things that the main-stream medical community could not, I would suggest they give Jason Lester a call, a remarkable ultra-athlete and a believer in chiropractic care.
